About Marple Swimming Club

Marple is a small village on the outer fringes of the Borough of Stockport, nestling on the edge of Derbyshires Peak District.

Marple Swimming Pool opened in 1932 and the club was formed soon after, in 1933. Apart from a break during the war years the pool has been in more or less continuous use ever since. The pool has been much modernized and has just benefited from the installation of a new boiler and heating system.

Based at the pool, Marple Swimming Club runs swimming classes for all ages.

Classes are available to meet a wide range of abilities, from absolute beginners, usually around the age of five, through intermediate levels and up to competitive team from age 9/10 to 18+. Beginners and improvers have one lesson each week, which increases to three sessions each week for the competitive team. Entry for those who can already swim is by time trial.

Life-saving classes are run at intervals during the year and again, these cover a range of abilities, leading up to the Royal Life-Saving Society's Bronze Medallion from age 14 . There are occasional sessions devoted to distance swims (for badges) or for diving tuition. Adults have their own half hour lane swimming sessions twice a week.

We are an amateur club, buying pool time from the council, and run entirely by volunteer parents and club members. All our teachers hold Amateur Swimming Association Teaching Qualifications, and again, are mostly unpaid volunteers. We do ask, therefore, that parents consider offering to do a little to assist with the running of the club.

The Team train three times each week and compete against other clubs in a variety of local leagues. In addition the faster swimmers may enter county age-group competitions. Several Marple swimmers have represented Cheshire or Manchester District at county level, and a few have gone on to represent the country at international level.

If you have any questions about the club, please either come down to the pool on a Friday Evening or contact us.
