Meet the Coaches
 

Matthew Walker Coach - Juniors
Matt has had an outstanding career as an international swimmer representing Great Britain and England. His achievements and endeavours are an inspiration and in 2008 he was awarded an MBE for services to disabled sports. Matt won his first international medal in 1997 at the European Championships in Spain and subsequently went on to win a further four European Championship medals and eight World Championship medals. As the only disabled swimmer representing England at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, he won a bronze medal. Matt has participated in three Paralympic Games - Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008 - and has won an amazing total of 11 medals! He now has his sights set on London 2012. Significantly, despite the demands of his swimming career and with a desire to give something back, Matt has always maintained a close relationship with the Club since starting to swim here at the age of eight. He was appointed as a Club Coach in 2001 and holds the ASA Level 2 Teaching qualification.

Daniel PepperCoach - Seniors
Dan joined the Club as a beginner in 1993 at the age of four. Following success at the mini meets, Dan was invited to join Stockport Metro when he was twelve and he continued to pursue his competitive swimming career there whilst maintaining his membership and contact with the Club. Dan's successes are outstanding. As a school boy, he represented his area in the English Schools Swimming Association National Finals, was a member of the Cheshire County squad and a member of Stockport Metro's relay team at the Nationals. Such achievements were accomplished alongside Dan's international disability swimming career which began at the age of 14 when he represented Great Britain at the INAS-FID World Championships in Hong Kong winning gold in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events. This performance was repeated at the intellectual disability championships where Dan also attained world titles in the 200m IM and 400m IM. Further success came at the IPC European Championships in Iceland 2009 where Dan won three individual gold medals. This performance was surpassed by his double gold winning performance at the IPC World Championships in 2010 which led to a nomination for an ASA Splash award. Dan is now preparing for a further IPC Europeans in 2011 and looking forward to fulfilling his dream of London 2012! Dan is a natural communicator and motivator and holds both Level 1 and Level 2 ASA Teaching qualifications. He also brings to the Club the valuable experience he has gained coaching juniors at Stockport Metro. 

Mike Reed - Teacher and Swim Lesson Coordinator - Beginners and Improvers
Mike has been an invaluable part of the Club since he started to swim here at the age of five. As a swimmer, he was a committed member of the Club regularly representing the Club in Intertown fixtures and Manchester and District galas. At the age of 14, Mike started helping in the water with children learning to swim and went on to achieve his ASA Pool Helper qualification. He began teaching swimming at the age of 16, having achieved his ASA Level 1 Teaching qualification, and, in October 2009, assumed responsibility for the coordination of the Beginners and Improvers lessons at the Club, having already successfully gained his ASA Level 2 Teaching qualification. Mike also brings to the Club the benefit of the considerable experience he has gained from his teaching roles within Stockport Sports Trust's swimming instruction scheme.  He also holds the National Pool Lifeguard qualification. 

Lucy Budd - Teacher and Coaching Coordinator - Development, Juniors and Seniors
Lucy is the parent of three swimmers at the Club spanning all the groups from Beginners to Seniors.  She has been actively involved with the Club for the past four years. During this time she has held various positions on the Committee and continues to contribute greatly to the development and smooth running of the Club. On poolside, Lucy's enthusiastic and encouraging approach helps to motivate swimmers to work hard and achieve their full potential. In recent times, Lucy has also organised entries for external galas and assisted with local galas and mini meets and so she is very familiar with the different levels of competition available to swimmers at each stage of their development. Lucy is a qualified physical education teacher (B.Ed Hons.) and has achieved her ASA Level 1 Aquatics Teaching qualification. In addition, she is a qualified timekeeper and Level 1 Judge.

Julian Taylor - Teacher - Beginners, Improvers, Development and Juniors
Julian joined the Club as a beginner at the age of four and has been a member ever since. He quickly progressed through the development groups at the Club and was selected to join the Junior Team at the early age of nine. Julian has always been a valued and committed member of the Club and a great role model for our younger swimmers. In the not too distant past, he also proved himself a worthy captain of both the Junior and Senior Teams. Julian continues to swim for the Club in the Senior Team competing in Intertown and Manchester and District galas. At the age of 14 Julian completed the ASA Pool Helper qualification; at 16 he achieved his ASA Level 1 Teaching qualification and, at 17, was awarded the ASA Level 2 Teaching and National Pool Lifeguard qualifications. In the future, Julian hopes to complete his swim coaching qualifications. 

Sarah Clifford - Teacher - Beginners, Improvers, Development and Juniors
Sarah started swimming at the Club at the age of ten and regularly represented the Club in Intertown fixtures and galas. At the age of 14 she started helping in the water with Beginner swimmers and achieved her ASA Pool Helper qualification in 2006. Sarah gained her ASA Level 1 Teaching qualification in the summer of 2009 and started teaching at the Club the following September. She holds the National Pool Lifeguard qualification and gained her ASA Level 2 Teaching qualification in March 2011. 

Imogen Posford - Teaching Assistant - Beginners and Improvers
Imogen started swimming as a baby in Hong Kong and joined the Club at the age of eight when her family returned to the UK in 2001. She began swimming in Beginners and worked her way through Improvers and Development before joining the Junior Team aged ten and the Senior Team at eleven. Imogen regularly competed for the Club in Intertown and Manchester and District galas and represented Manchester and District in the Inter-Association Championships when she was twelve. For three years, Imogen also trained and competed for Satellites of Macclesfield Swimming Club, competing in the premier division of the National Swimming League, whilst still training and competing for Marple. Imogen completed her ASA Teaching Aquatics Level 1 qualification when she was 17 and hopes to achieve the Level 2 qualification in the near future.
Michael CliffordTeaching Assistant - Beginners, Improvers, Development and Juniors
Mike joined the Club at the age of seven. Since then he has represented the Club in both Junior and Senior teams in Intertown and Manchester and District galas. Mike began helping in the water with Beginner swimmers when he was 14 and achieved both his ASA Level 1 Teaching Aquatics qualification and National Pool Lifeguard qualification in 2010. Mike teachers the Beginners, Improvers, Development and Juniors and lifeguards for the Club on Tuesday and Friday evenings. 

Joseph Briggs - Teaching Assistant - Beginners, Improvers, Development and Juniors
Joe joined the Club at the age of seven and became a member of the Junior Team when he was eight. About the same time, he was invited to attend coaching sessions at Grand Central and subsequently went on to train with Stockport Metro Swimming Club for over four years whilst maintaining dual membership with Marple Swimming Club. During this period Joe competed at County, Regional and National level and gained invaluable experience in advanced stroke techniques in a disciplined and demanding training environment. Since returning to swim at Marple Joe has represented the Club in Intertown and Manchester and District galas. He has also continued to compete in County and Regional competitions when possible. Joe was elected Senior Team captain for the year 2009/2010 and carried out the role with enthusiasm and commitment. He achieved his ASA Level 1 Teaching Aquatics qualification in 2010 at the age of 16 and also holds the National Pool Lifeguard qualification.

In the Water Pool Helpers
Teachers and coaches are assisted by in the water helpers during classes for Beginners. They are experienced swimmers from the Club who are encouraged and supported by the Club to go on to achieve ASA qualifications. Swimmers currently on the in the water helpers rota are:- Kirstie Haigh (ASA Pool Helpers Qualfication, ASA Swimming Challenge awards - honours, gold, silver and bronze), Kirsty Barker, Ben Potter (qualified Club lifeguard), Fraser Posford (qualified Club lifeguard), Lucy Hilling, Dan Holmes, Liz Holmes, Beth Peach, Bethany Todd, Ryan Nolan, Jacob Mortlock-Williams and Adam Morgan.
